Mullapperiyardam Controversy

Mullapperiyardam Controversy

Mullaperiyar Dam or Mullai Periyar Dam is a masonry gravity dam on the Periyar River which was created by British government between 1887 and 1895.It is built on the Cardamom Hills of the Western Ghats in Thekkady, Idukki District of Kerala, India. Objective of creating this dam was to divert water eastwards to Madras Presidency area (the present-day Tamil Nadu). It has a height of 53.6 m (176 ft.) from the foundation and length of 365.7 m (1,200 ft.).The Periyar National Park in Thekkady is located around the dam’s reservoir.

Mullaperiyar Dam and the river are located in Kerala but the dam is controlled and operated under a period lease by neighboring Tamil Nadu state. The current conflict and issue between kerala and Tamilnadu is regarding to the same agreement. The dam is an ‘endangered’ scheduled dam under the Kerala Irrigation and Water Conservation (Amendment) Act, 2006.

Mullaperiyar Dam project has been in the news for some time and people across both states are adversely affected by this controversy. Mullperiyar dam project controversy has already hit the cardamom industry in the region due to unavailability of Tamil workers in the region. Cardamom prices have touched Rs 400 per kg from Rs 350 kg. This is a mere example of the current situation.

Mullaperiyar dam issue is beyond economics and has gradually become a social issue between two states in the region. A expert panel was constituted in 2010 to work on the issue of Mullaperiyar dam and they have recently inspected the dam site in Idukki . Kerala has been saying that Dam’s structure is extremely week and it can break any time which can causes severe catastrophe in the region and Tamilnadu’s view is that it can be maintained by adequate repair.

There has been many heated exchanges between the government of Kerala and Tamilnadu. This controversy is still far from over, at least as far as the current situation is concerned. But let’s hope and pray that both government can handle the situation well and resolve it soon so that the tension between states is reduced without any damage to anybody.
