What happened to Yahoo Search Marketing?

What happened to Yahoo Search Marketing? It’s been a while since there have been any positive news about Yahoo. Yahoo is a company which is known for its revolutionary products and strong foothold in online search marketing industry. It used to be one of the favorite options for many online marketers to do their advertising. But in last few years, yahoo has been slipping constantly.

Yahoo has stopped many of their services in last few years like explorer and search engine. Currently they have collaboration with Microsoft and Yahoo search is powered by Bing. So when you run a query in Yahoo search engine, it’s not the Yahoo’s search engine which runs the query but the Bing which actually does the job.

As Yahoo’s flagship product, its search engine has stopped working, Yahoo search marketing prospects have also fallen. Yahoo has seen a very tough competition from its search engine rival Google. Google has proactively produced good quality products. The new kid on the block, Facebook, has probably made the biggest difference.

The market share for online marketing was largely divided between Yahoo, Google and Microsoft till few years ago. But then the development of social networking sites provided a newer platform for internet marketers for their advertising needs. Social networking sites especially Facebook changed the entire equation. Today marketers, who were initially going to Yahoo and Google, are now moving towards social networking sites like Facebook, Linkedin etc.

Google has managed to maintain its position but things are not very comfortable for them also. There has been a drop in the interest of internet marketers in Google Adwords services. Social networking sites are producing better results for internet marketers as far as conversion is concerned. And this is happening despite the fact the Google Search engine is still very powerful.

So if Google is having tough time with a successful search engine, it is extremely difficult for Yahoo to maintain its Search marketing business. Yahoo search marketing’s website is showing a message that their contact sales form is currently being updated. I am not even sure if they are accepting any orders at the moment. And even if they are accepting orders, it is extremely difficult for them to convince a customer to do business with them because in that case, customer will prefer Bing which actually powers them rather than Yahoo search marketing solutions.

So road ahead is really tough for Yahoo Search Marketing and it will be interesting to see if Yahoo can revamp itself from here.
